The Department of Health and Human Services' Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology should ensure that any federal governance structure for nationwide health information exchange "builds on existing privacy and security standards and appropriately balances the importance of increasing patient and provider trust in electronic exchange with the need to avoid imposing unduly burdensome requirements on entities that facilitate that exchange," AHA Executive Vice President Rick Pollack said in comments submitted today. The agency requested information to inform future rulemaking on governance approaches that would advance health information exchange. The AHA also asked that any future governance model be truly voluntary, and not linked to other regulatory requirements.
