CMS readies RAC changes, pause in audits
Feb 21, 2014
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Feb. 19 said it will “pause” additional documentation requests by Recovery Audit Contractors (RAC) until new RAC contracts are in place. The pause in requests is to begin today, Feb. 21, for post-payment reviews and Feb. 28 for pre-payment reviews. For more on the pause, click on: http://tinyurl.com/mcgzdo3.
CMS also announced five changes to the RAC program that will be included in the next round of RAC contracts. For more on the changes, click on: http://tinyurl.com/qffuwz4.
The AHA said the changes are small steps toward addressing hospital concerns with RACs’ administrative burden, and do not address lengthy delays in the RAC appeals process or discourage RACs from making inappropriate denials. The AHA said it will press CMS to address its concerns as it builds support for passage of the Medicare Audit Improvement Act, H.R. 1250/S. 1012.
(For more on the push for RAC reforms, see page 6.) The AHA Feb. 20 sent its members a Special Bulletin on the planned contract changes. For more on
