Fiscal cliffs stir concerns
Nov 8, 2013
The new fiscal cliffs will be here before hospitals know it, and the flashpoint again will likely be whether Republicans will agree to revenue increases if Democrats agree to cuts in entitlement programs. Will there be sequester relief … and what will it mean for hospitals? And will hospitals be eyed for savings as part of a physician payment fix?
It’s crucial in the weeks and months ahead to continue to drive home our message on rejecting Medicare and Medicaid cuts and providing payment and administrative relief so hospitals can continue to meet their patients’ and communities’ needs.
Hospitals have been cut by more than $95 billion since 2010, and can’t afford any more cuts that would threaten patient care. Your members of Congress need to understand that more cuts will have consequences that many of you are struggling to avoid: overloaded emergency departments, closed trauma units and reduced patient access to the latest medical treatments.
Our recent Advocacy Day meetings have given a big grassroots boost to our efforts to build congressional support for the hospital advocacy agenda. We’re counting on you to help us keep the momentum growing by coming to Washington for three more Advocacy Day meetings, scheduled for Nov. 19, Dec. 3 and Jan. 8. Advocacy Days give you up-to-the-minute political briefings, and lay the advocacy groundwork for your meetings on Capitol Hill with legislators and their staff.
For background information and factsheets to help you make your case to legislators, please visit the AHA Action Center at www.aha.org/actioncenter. To register for Advocacy Days, e-mail the AHA’s Michael McCue at email@example.com . Do it today! Let your senators and representative know how important these issues are to your hospital and the patients you serve.
