Hospital leaders are raising the issue of overzealous Medicare RACs on Capitol Hill

AHA News

Four hospital and health system leaders earlier today, July 26, briefed congressional staff on Capitol Hill about the problems they face due to a growing demand for medical records and voluminous payment denials made by Medicare’s recovery audit contractors (RACs). Steven Hanks, The Hospital of Central Connecticut’s executive vice president and chief medical officer in Norwalk, participated in today’s briefing and a similar Hill briefing in May. He says the briefings are giving congressional staff a much better appreciation for hospitals’ frustration in dealing with RACs, and the field’s push for passage of the AHA-backed“Medicare Audit Improvement Act,” S. 1012/H.R. 1250. (See the “Hill Head Count” for the representatives who support H.R. 1250.) Listen here to what Hanks has to say about RACs.
