NIH awards $170 million for stem cell research

AHA News Now

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute today awarded 18 research teams $170 million over seven years to develop stem and progenitor cell tools and therapies. A stem cell can renew itself indefinitely and differentiate, while a progenitor cell can divide a limited number of times and may be limited in the kind of cell it can become. "Important gaps remain in our understanding of stem and progenitor cells, and this consortium holds great promise to expand our knowledge and uncover therapeutic applications of great public impact," said NHLBI Director Elizabeth Nabel, M.D.
