Missouri hospitals’ investments in employees and capital contributed more than $19 billion to the state’s economy in 2012, according to a new University of Missouri report prepared for the Missouri Hospital Association. Missouri’s 155 hospitals employed 152,964 people in 2012, whose earnings moved through the economy to generate an additional 140,982 indirect and induced jobs and nearly $13.3 billion in total compensation. “It’s clear that in addition to providing excellent medical care, hospitals serve as an economic engine in the communities they serve,” said MHA President and CEO Herb Kuhn.
