Survey: more RAC reviews

Hospitals continue to experience rapid growth in recovery audit contractor (RAC) reviews, according to the latest results of the AHA’s quarterly RACTrac survey. The new report shows cumulative medical record requests have increased by 13% since the first quarter of 2013, while the number of cumulative complex audit denials reported by respondents increased by 28% during that six-month period.

About 60% of medical records reviewed by RACs did not contain an overpayment; however, 68% of hospitals reported spending more than $10,000 managing the RAC process during the third quarter, 49% spent more than $25,000, and 12% spent more than $100,000.
