News at Deadline Tavenner renominated to lead CMS

AHA News
President Obama yesterday renominated Marilyn Tavenner as administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. She has served as acting administrator since December 2011 and previously was principal deputy administrator.

The Senate did not hold a hearing on her previous nomination. The AHA welcomed Tavenner’s renomination. AHA President and CEO Rich Umbdenstock said Tavenner’s “varied and rich background as a nurse, health care executive and government official at the state and national levels gives her a unique perspective and demonstrates that she is a very capable leader of the Medicare and Medicaid programs.” Tavenner served on the AHA board, leaving in 2005 to become Virginia’s secretary of health and human resources.
