Study: Patient satisfaction associated with quality

Hospitals performing in the top quartile on the HCAHPS survey of patients’ perception of care had slightly higher average scores for clinical quality than hospitals performing in the bottom quartile, according to a study in the Oct. 30 New England Journal of Medicine. Based on an analysis of the first set of HCAHPS data, which was publicly reported on the Hospital Compare Web site in March, the study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health found hospitals ranking in the top quartile on HCAHPS scored an average 2 to 4 percentage points higher on the Hospital Quality Alliance’s quality measures. HCAHPS scores also varied based on hospital characteristics, such as location and size.
