Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg, Texas, and Austin, Texas-based St. David’s HealthCare, a six-hospital system, are among the four organizations to win the 2014 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the U.S. Commerce Department announced today. The winners will receive their awards at a ceremony next April in Baltimore. “The AHA congratulates Hill Country Memorial Hospital and St. David’s HealthCare on winning the Baldrige award,” said AHA President and CEO Rich Umbdenstock. “As lead sponsor of the health care criteria, the AHA is deeply committed to quality improvement through the Baldrige process and helping hospitals reach the highest levels of excellence.” Congress established the award in 1987 to promote excellence in organizational performance, and health care organizations became eligible for the competition in 1998. To date, 99 organizations – including 19 hospitals and health systems – have received the award. Under the Baldrige process, award applicants are rigorously evaluated each year by a panel of experts. The award is presented each year to six types of organizations: manufacturers, service companies, small businesses, education, health care and non-profit organizations. The Baldrige Foundation announced last month that the AHA will be the lead sponsor for the Baldrige award’s 2015-2016 health care criteria.
